Kurzweil’s theories are interesting,
For they predict a change so remarkable
That it cannot be predicted what will happen next.
Nevermind that he goes on to predict it anyway.
Yet I cannot help but think of the Jetsons,
With Rosie the robot, intelligent talking dogs,
And flying cars that transform into a suitcase.
Even with all their technology,
Bills had to be paid,
Jobs were won and lost,
And food had to be put on the table.
I wonder when technology
Will tackle REAL problems.
I don’t think it will be at all like the jetson’s. They WILL tackle the real problems. Everyone can retire by 2035 and live to be 1000 years old. Unfortunately, we will lose all perspective of what it is to be human. Maybe the bots will solve that too.
What strikes me about the singularity is how opaque it is. Kurzweil thinks we’ll use every scrap to compute more and then radiate outwards at the speed of light. I don’t think he can say that.
I wrote a blog on the subject: god’s first whim
